MAGNETISM

MAGNETIC FORCE

Magnetic force is an attractive pull or a repulsive push between poles of magnets.
It acts at a distance and cannot be seen. It is also a force of attraction between magnet and magnetic objects.

DISTINGUISH BETWEEN MAGNETIC AND NON-MAGNETIC MATERIALS

A magnetic material is any material that a magnet will attract to itself when placed near the magnet (or when placed in its field). These primarily include: steel, cobalt and nickel.

A non-magnetic material is a material that will not experience any magnetic force when placed near a magnet, in other words, it will not be attracted to the magnet. These include common metals such as copper, aluminium and brass. Other non-magnetic substances are wood, glass, copper plastic and rubber

DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN THE MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF SOFT IRON AND STEEL

Soft iron has high susceptibility and low retentivity because it gets magnetized faster and loses its magnetic properties once the inducing magnet is removed.

However, steel has low susceptibility and high retentivity because it takes a longer time to get magnetized and retains its magnetic properties for a longer time after the inducing magnet is removed.

METHODS OF MAGNETIZATION

Magnetization is the process of making a body permanently of temporarily magnetic. There are two fundamental ways in which magnetization can take place.

1. Stroking Method.

Stroking method involves the repeated movement of a strong magnet over a the metal that is to acquire magnetic properties. The steel bar is stroked with the same pole of the permanent magnet from one end to the other end in one direction.

2. Electrical Method.

Electrical method of magnetization involves the use of direct current (D.C). When the two end of the metal (as shown in the case of nail above) is connected to each of the two poles of the battery, a magnetic field is set up. In this type of magnetization, once the the flow of the current is disconnected, the metal will also lose its magnetic property.

QUESTION:

1.      Are forces between Magnets and magnetic materials always attractive or repulsive?
